In 1528, the town was made a royal town after the granting of a charter by
King Henry VIII. The formal Mayoral chains of office are now on display in
Birmingham Council House.
Sutton Coldfield is mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare in Henry
IV, Part 1, Act IV, Scene 2 where Falstaff says:
Bardolph, get thee before to
Coventry. Fill me a bottle of sack; our soldiers shall march through; we'll to
Sutton Cofil tonight.
