The city was an agricultural market town in the Middle Ages, and received its
first charter in 1207. In the Tudor period Leeds was mainly a merchant town
manufacturing woollen cloths and trading with Europe via the Humber estuary. At
one point nearly half of England's total export passed through Leeds. The city's
industrial growth was catalysed by the introduction of the Leeds and Liverpool
Canal in 1816 and the railway in 1848.

Leeds Civic Trust is a
voluntary, non-political body, open to everyone who wants to participate
in and influence the planning of our City - not simply at election time or
on other formal occasions. but constantly in the everyday decisions that
affect our environment and the way of life in work and leisure.
The objects of the Trust are to promote and encourage the following, by
charitable means but not otherwise;
 | To stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty,
history and character of the City and locality |
 | To encourage high standards of design, architecture and town
planning |
 | To encourage the development and improvement of features of
general public amenity |
 | To promote and organise co-operation in the achievement of
these objectives |
Leeds Civic Trust is its members. Membership is increasing all the
time, but more are needed, so why not join us?. Although many members
participate in the Committees and help with events, it's not necessary. A
strong membership increases the influence the Trust has over the way the
City is progressing, as well as helping to provide the funds to do it. As
a member your voice too can be heard, and you will have the benefit of
keeping up with events through the monthly Newsletter and taking advantage
of the numerous events which take place throughout the year.
Leeds Civic Trust has five categories of members;
 | Individual members £20 p.a.
 | Family members £25 p.a.
 | Affiliated Societies £25 p.a.
 | Corporate members £300 p.a.
 | Gold Corporate members £1000 p.a |
