It is believed to get its name from a long gone drainage channel which ran over a peat bog. The water which ran into the sea at Blackpool was black from the peat and formed a "black pool" in the relatively clean waters of the Irish Sea.

Blackpool is heavily dependent on tourism. Major attractions include:

bulletThe three piers: the North (built in 1863), Central (1868) and South (1893).
bulletBlackpool Tower, built in May 1894, is a 518-foot-tall copy of the Eiffel Tower. It was painted gold for its centenary.
bulletThe Blackpool Pleasure Beach amusement park, near to the South Pier.

In what is often regarded as its heyday (1900-1960), Blackpool heaved as the factory workers of northern England took their annual holidays there en masse.

The Blackpool Civic Trust was formed in February 1975 with the intention of encouraging and supporting the town of Blackpool and its people. Our objectives and aims are to stimulate a sense of Civic pride, to promote high standards of planning and architecture and to secure the preservation, protection and improvement of features of historical or public interest.

The Trust is a non-political, non-sectarian organization serving only the interests of the people. Throughout the year we make numerous visits to places of interest. We also feature a wide variety of talks covering the history and development of Blackpool. We have been instrumental in many varied projects throughout our short history.

The Trust keeps an eye on listed buildings and maintains an interest in areas relevant to Blackpool's status as a premier resort. The Trust has encouraged campaigns and competitions initiated by the "Keep Blackpool Tidy" group.
