Notes

The table has been compiled using the 2001 Census publications Key Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales Table KS01 ( released 17 June 2004), Key Statistics for Settlements and Localities Scotland Table KS01 (released 25 March 2003) and Northern Ireland Census 2001 Key Statistics for Settlements Table KS01 (released 10 February 2005).  The names and populations of all urban areas and urban sub-divisions recognised as towns were extracted and included in the list.

The actual City of London only has a 2001 census population of 7,185 but is recognised by the world as the larger Local Authority area known as Greater London made up of 31 London Boroughs and the two cites of London and Westminster. Therefore the population shown  for London is that of Greater London as published in Key Statistics for local authorities in England and Wales Table KS01 ( released on 13 February 2003). For this reason all urban sub-divisions of the Greater London urban area which are also London Boroughs are excluded as their populations are included within the London population shown. The only exception is Westminster whose urban population is listed because it has separate city status.

The populations of Brighton (134,293) and Hove (72,335) have been combined as they are now generally recognised as one city after they together won city status in 2000. Thanet and Torbay urban areas are composed of separate smaller towns and are therefore not listed.  The urban sub-division of the West Midlands Urban Area of  Oldbury/Smethwick are two separate towns and  neither has a population of over 100,000 and therefore not listed. The Cambridge/Milton urban sub-division of 117,717 includes Milton village with a 2001 census population of 4,275 leaving Cambridge with a population of 113,442 as shown.
